A good DJ is an essential element to any event, whether it’s a wedding, bar or bat mitzvah, graduation party, or another special celebration. These days, it’s easy to do a quick Internet search and come up with dozens of DJs in the Rochester area. This can make choosing the right DJ for your part incredibly difficult. However, there are a few qualities that every DJ should have if you want a great experience. Below are a few things to talk to potential DJs about before hiring.
Things to Look for in a DJ
1. Experience
Look for a DJ with at least a few years of experience. They should have mixing skills as well as a large library of music. Experienced DJs will know how to get people on the dance floor and read the crowd, seamlessly blending different genres while creating a fantastic atmosphere.
Pro Tip: Working with an amateur DJ? That’s okay, but be sure to ask for a reference(s). And hey, it’s okay to do that with an experienced DJ, too.
2. Professionalism
You’re dealing with a pro, so make sure your DJ provides a written agreement. You’ll want all of the details laid out in a formal document so that both of you are on the same page - literally.
Pro Tip: Ask if your DJ offers event insurance.
3. The Right Equipment
Good DJs will have professional, high-quality equipment. Better yet, they’ll know how to use it - they’ll bring the right sound system for your party size, and they’ll play it at the appropriate volume.
Pro Tip: Ask about backup. Once in a blue moon, even the best equipment can fail. Make sure your DJ has a Plan B.
4. Personal Connection
How do you feel when you are around your DJ? Do you feel comfortable around them, like they’re a good match for you and your style? Perhaps you feel a little distant from them, like this is just a business agreement. Truth is, it is a business deal, but you want it to feel more personal than that.
Pro Tip: Remember, this is supposed to be fun!
5. Good communication
The best DJs will listen to your thoughts and concerns as you go along the way. Keep in mind that some DJs only want to use their own playlists, but good ones will be open to suggestions. They’ll be open to taking requests at the event, too.
Pro Tip: Be sure to discuss appropriate attire before your event. Your DJ will want to know whether to dress formally, casually, or anything in between.
